White Water Fun Near Fort William

Highland Activities run white water funyakking trips a few different rivers in the area based on water levels and the group.

River Oich

Most of our trips take place on the River Oich which is a fun grade 2 river that winds it’s way down the Great Glen from Loch Oich and finishes in Loch Ness at Fort Augustus. The river Oich has around 10 grade 1 & 2 rapids that vary in size depending on the level of water. We normally run this river the day after the River Garry has released it’s water into Loch Oich to increase it’s volume.

River Lochy

Another river that we sometimes use as an alternative to the Oich is the River Lochy that flows in the opposite direction down the Great Glen down into Fort William with some spectacular views of Ben Nevis and the surrounding mountains. We exit this river at the ruins of the old Inverlochy Castle. The decision on which river we use is based on the weather and river levels on the day.

River Roy

When we have had enough rain and with groups that are over 18 we also run trips down the River Roy which is a fantastic river with over 20 rapids of grade 2 & 3. This river has a different feel about it that the other 2 rivers due to the remote nature of the trip making it feel like a wilderness river adventure.

River Awe (Oban)

If you are in the Fort William area in the summer and looking for a more guaranteed funyakking experience with guaranteed water and rapids then you may wish to come on  one of our trips down the River Awe near Oban (50 miles from Fort William). This river has great guaranteed grade 2 & 3 white water and runs every day due to a compensation flow from the dam.
